V-Sport’s Barrie and Jan Smith have placed third at Targa Hellyer Gorge, held in Tasmania earlier this month. The one day event was designed to encourage newcomers to the sport, as well as offer opportunities for teams and drivers to test ahead of the 2015 competitive season taking shape.
After campaigning in the V-Sport Mitsubishi Evo X for several seasons, Barrie and Jan have adopted a European flavour for their 2015 campaign, debuting in the newly built Audi TTRS tarmac rally car at the event.
“Prior to the event I had only driven the car on and off the trailer. Going in to the weekend, our aim was to become familiar with it, and find any issues,” said Barrie.
“The car is more than I hoped for, it’s fantastic. The torque, and the way it gets out of corners impressed me. The secret to any Targa event is getting out of corners quickly, so it should be a competitive package.”
“There is small room for improvement, as we were getting a lot of temperature in the brakes. The car still had the standard brake calipers on for this event. We will be upgrading to Brembo competition calipers for the next round.”
Overall, the car performed well enough to earn Barrie and Jan a step on the podium, placing third in Modern class. Looking ahead, the duo will finesse the 2.5L Turbo AWD over two more events before tackling the biggest event of the year, Targa Tasmania.
“We still have the Mount Baw Baw Sprint and Lake Mountain Sprint to perfect the car before the big one, Targa Tasmania in April.”
Stay tuned for updates on their progress!
